The answer to that question is not as provocative as one might hope. However, I do think the books one reads tells a lot about them. I have a friend who was doing book reviews on her blog, and I loved reading them. So I thought, "Lynn, why not share what you are reading. If not to allow those who read your blog to get to know you better, then for future generations." I want my grandchildren to know that grandma loved a good romance, but the kind without the chicken parts. (You know, breasts, thighs, and legs) I want them to know that while grandma loved to read wholesome books, she also had the guilty pleasure of murder mysteries full of eye-popping twists and turns, think Patricia Cornwell here.
So....
I just finished reading The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom for a book group through church. I HIGHLY recommend this book to all. It is a poignant autobiographical story about a Christian family in Holland that finds themselves working with the underground to hide Jews during WWII. I cried, I chuckled, I cried some more, and I began to see that atoning sacrifice of my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ is awesome. Not that this is news to me, but it never hurts to be reminded on a regular basis.
Also on my nightstand are two books from one of my favorite LDS authors, Betsy Brannon Green. I love her books, they have mystery, they have action, and even romance without all the unnecessary blood, gore, guts, and yes, CHICKEN PARTS. I love that even though she is an LDS author, I can recommend her books to my non-LDS friends because while there are gospel truths woven into her stories, they are not so far out there or preachy that it could be a turn off or offensive. I am currently reading the first book in her new Duty series, Hazardous Duty.
I had to put it down for a bit to ensure I would finish The Hiding Place in time for the book group get together this evening. (I can be a slow reader.) This book is a story that encompasses one of my greatest fears....the kidnapping of a child. Holy Hannah does that just make my skin crawl and is the stuff that either keeps me up at night or gives me nightmares. My greatest fear is something devastating happening to the precious daughter we worked so hard for, and waited so long to get. Since I know this particular author won't leave us hanging...I know there is a happy ending coming my way, until then I will keep turning pages and biting nails.
Underneath Hazardous Duty the book lying in wait is the next one in the Duty series...
I'll tell you more about this one once I actually get to cracking it open. And I suppose there is no need to tell you about the stacks of books waiting to read on the floor beside the nightstand as we are only talking about the ones that currently reside
on the nightstand.
Maybe if my monitor continues to play nice I will update you on some of the other books that have graced the top of my night stand recently. Alas my friends, that will be a post for another day.
I just finished a quick read titled, Accepting Joy by Todd F. Cope. If you want a quick one or two day read that will leave your heart feeling good, this is the book for you! This young couple should be happy; they've just moved into their first home, are expecting their first baby. But unexpected news about their only neighbor and their unborn baby sends them into a tail spin. In the end will they learn to accept joy?
Looking for a can't put it down mystery with plenty of twists, turns, and mouth watering recipes? Then Lemon Tart by Josi S. Kilpack is for you! Sadi is the neighborhood go to, you need someone to watch your kids, you need help...go to Sadi. Sadi races to solve the murder of a neighbor. She finds herself in some interesting positions, and a couple of times she had to eat humble pie. But in the end she gets is figured out, and all is not as it seemed. I am looking forward to the next book in the series, English Trifle to be released this fall.
I FINALLY got around to reading the second book in Betsy Brannon Green's Duty series. It came due at the library so I had to turn it back in as the library wouldn't let me renew. Then I had to wait until my turn on the hold list came back around. This one I COULD NOT put down! Even better than the first book. In this book the team try to flush out a mob boss, in the end they lose a team member, while gaining another. My name is number 137 on the hold list at the library for the third book, Code of Honor, just released...it might be awhile before I get to read the third one.
Last night I started, Knit Two, the sequel to Friday Night Knit Club by Kate Jacobs. If you like stories about the bonds of friendship, love, and trials amongst women, this is the book series for you. In the second book Dakota is all grown up, and the knit shop is struggling to remain true to Georgia's legacy, yet move on. If this sequel is anything like the first book, it promises to make me mutter under my breathe, laugh, and bawl like a baby.
